2018-07-16: Sheriff Press Release

On Saturday, July 14, 2018 at approximately 3:00 p.m. Emmet County Sheriff’s Office Marine Deputies responded to a boating accident involving a watercraft participating in the Boyne Thunder Poker Run, on Lake Michigan, according to Sheriff Pete Wallin. The vessel, a 1998 37 foot Outerlimits, driven by Steven Michael McCormack, age 39 of Marne, MI, was approximately 1.5 miles east of Petoskey, in Little Traverse Bay when the vessel either hit an object in the water or had a mechanical failure, which cause one of the outdrives to become separated from the vessel. The vessel abruptly turned sideways, skipping across the water causing 4 people to be thrown into the water. Two of the passengers, Jenny Lynn McCormick, age 29 of Marne, MI, and Sarah Marie Holford, age 33 of Spring Lake MI, were transported to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital.

Assisting the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office were Harbor Springs Police Department Marine Division, Petoskey Department of Public Safety and Emmet County EMS.
