Time for Emmet Free Tire Recycling Running Out

Free recycling of tires in Emmet County under a Michigan Department of Environmental Quality grant is set to wrap up August 21, according to Emmet County Recycling (ECR).

ECR accepts tires for recycling at the Pleasantview Road Drop-off Center on an ongoing basis year-round, but ordinarily charges $3 per tire for car and light truck tires. Under the tire recycling grant, they have been accepting tires—with some limitations—for free since May 10, 2018.

The grant has served residents in a wide variety of situations including individuals who have bought rural properties littered with dozens of abandoned tires and a mother clearing out worn out tires left behind by her sons over their teen years. Some of the tires have been collected from public lands and roadsides by neighbors.

To qualify for free recycling under the grant tires must:

  • Be from within Emmet County
  • Be from a household; tires from businesses are not covered by the grant
  • Be four feet or less in diameter and 12 inches or less wide

Those with more than seven tires to recycle are asked to call before delivering them. Emmet County Recycling can be reached at 231.348.0640.

The tires will be recycled by CM Rubber Technologies of Coleman, Michigan. CM Rubber shreds and purifies the rubber. Landscaping mulch, playground cover, a variety of mats, drain field aggregate, and equestrian footing are all produced from the tires.

The Pleasantview Road Drop-off Center is located at 7363 Pleasantview Road, Harbor Springs. The Center is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. More information can also be obtained by email to recycle@emmetcounty.org.
